Choosing the right leader at any level is difficult. Despite a multitude of “secrets to success,” recipes or ‘how to’ approaches to choosing leaders, the real world abounds with examples of the Peter Principle—leaders assigned to roles beyond their capabilities.

This becomes especially evident in turbulent times when leadership capability comes under severe pressure. It appears that a great deal of the leadership development approaches used during the ‘times of plenty’ of the past decade have bred a generation of fragile leaders, many of whom are finding the challenges of leading during a recession beyond their capabilities.

Deciding who has the potential to lead is one of the most critical steps people professionals can take to ensure the future of an organization. It’s accepted that assessment against an appropriate framework using effective methods and tools can dramatically improve the odds of identifying individuals with the greatest leadership potential but is that enough when organizations are facing seismic changes in the economy and working environment?

In this session Bob will share an approach to leadership assessment and development with a focus on determining how to select and develop leaders with the necessary resilience and qualities to be effective under the pressures of leading in turbulent times. These qualities include the key dimensions of leadership judgement and personal resilience that are essential for effective leadership and business success.
